Sony is dusting off the name "Walkman" to compete with Apples iPod. The Japanese are building on their own music experience to capitalize on the popularity of the smaller MP3 player.

In the eighties and nineties the Sony Walkmans and Discmans were a part of everyday life. But these days the MP3 player has market dominance and the Japanese company has faded. Apple and its iPod is now number one.

Just last week both companies introduced new MP3 players which will be in direct competition with each other. Sony introduced two players under the name "The New Walkman", while Apple released the iPod Nano.

Sony is using the name "Walkman" in the hope that 26 years after the first introduction of the famous cassette player that name still has competitive value. However, we must conclude that however great Sonys past accomplishments they have missed the boat in the MP3 revolution in a major way. The main cause for Sonys failure is their stubborn refusal to give up the Attrac3 music format. While the whole world was exchanging MP3 files it was only last year that Sony introduced players that can handle this format.

By that time Apple was just releasing its seventh generation of iPod-type players.

Sony now markets the NWA-1000 and NWA-3000. These music players can directly communicate with the Sony music store "Connect". It is also possible to copy files from the computer directly to the players.

Sony is well known for their activity in the music and film business. They must use their position in this field to regain market share and prestige in this interconnected industry. Interconnected because it seems that it is both Sonys and Apples strategy to heavily interconnect music player, software and music store. Apples iTunes was the first Internet music store offered large-scale legal downloads of MP3 files.

Sony wont give us any figures about their sales and market share. Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) has no problem with figures. Perhaps the major reason for this is how good they are. Apple claims about half a billion downloads in a heavily growing market.

The iTunes store is heavily focused on its cooperation with the iPod. This player is definitely the market leader among the more expensive MP3 players which have their own hard disk. In the cheaper segment, MP3 players with the so called flash memory, the leaders are Creative, LG and iRiver. The iPod Shuffle with its flash memory couldnt do much about that. The negative sentiment about the shuffle was mainly due to its lack of an LCD screen and relatively high price.

With the iPod Nano Steve Jobs Apple has a twofold challenge on its hands. Firstly there is the above-mentioned competition with Sony. Secondly, the new Apple player has a storage space of 4Gb of flash memory and no hard disk.

The iPod Nano is the successor to the iPod Mini. Apple is constantly reducing the physical size and the prize of their players. Their strategy seems to be to concentrate on iTunes as their major profit producer.

There is an interesting time ahead of us -- we will see heavy competition between Apple and Sony both in the interconnected markets of the MP3 players and their respective music stores.

Who will win? I dont know, but one thing I do know is that Apple was almost broke at the end of the last century. It has been under the leadership of Steve Jobs that Apple made an almost miraculous comeback as a major player on the global market of mini-electronics.

Throughout the essay, I will explore other reformers and sects who followed in Luther's wake to challenge the established religious ways. I will be concentrating on Zwingli; Calvin, and the Anabaptists. I will expound upon the main differences between their religious interpretation and Luther's own positions.

Like Luther, Zwingli; Calvin, and the Anabaptists contributed to the great Reformation - the reformation that hastened the Disintegration or the Dissolution of the Medieval Catholic Church during the Disintegration period of the 14th century to the 15th century, and beyond. Muentzer, who instigated the 1525 Peasant Rebellion while Luther was under the protection of Fredrick the Wise, was more radical than Luther. Muentzer wanted to reform the temporal aspects of the Reformation. Hence, he wanted to abolish serfdom on the basis of 'true Christianity.' Luther denounced Muentzer (a German monk and Luther's friend) for his radicalism. Luther stated Muentzer's execution was God's punishment on him.

Zwingli is a Swiss nationalist and reformer based in Zurich. He agreed with Luther on most points. However, Zwingli disagreed with Luther on Consubstantiation.

Zwingli argued the word 'is used in its Greek/Latin form means'signify'. Therefore, the Communion is neither a rite of Transubstantiation nor Consubstantiation. Rather, the Communion is 'a memorial service' of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Zwingli's disagreement created a mountain between himself and Luther. As a matter of fact, the Swiss Protestants under Zwingli were not supported by Luther's German Protestants in their war against the Catholic forces because of their disagreement (carved by Luther on a negotiating table, "This is my body" in Latin). The disagreement was so sore that Luther exclaimed, 'he got what he deserved.... His death proved I'm right and he's wrong; upon hearing of Zwingli's demise in battle (a Bible in one hand and a sword in the other).

Calvin, a French transplant based in Geneva, shared many points with Luther. However, like Zwingli, Calvin believed the Communion is a 'Memorial Service' instead of a Consubstantiation. Luther believed what's not in the Bible, is allowed - for example, singing and dancing. In contrast, Calvin believed everything that's not supported by Scriptures is forbidden by God, including singing and dancing.

Calvin was more extreme than Luther as per 'the doctrine of Predestination.' For example, God chooses who is going to Heaven and damned others to go to Hell. Calvin wanted to create 'a new Jerusalem' on earth (via Geneva). He believed in good living (capitalistic somewhat) of Christians (Christians should be the best they can be....)

The Anabaptists is a sect that spread all over Europe. Today, the Amish sects are descendants of the Anabaptists. Unlike Luther, the Anabaptists only believe in adult baptism (hence their name). They reject oaths, swearing, violence and etc. They believe man should imitate Christ. Thus, the Anabaptists are the true elect of the Church. The Anabaptists were harshly persecuted by both the Catholics and other Protestant sects because of their aforementioned beliefs (which they consider a threat to the security of society). Nonetheless, an Anabaptist sect led by John of Leyden violently took over a town named Munster. This Anabaptist sect was the exception as per their use of violence. They were defeated, eventually. The leaders were hung in a cage by a church in the town of Munster as stated by the esteemed historian - Dr. Wladyslaw Roczniak.

In conclusion, I explored other reformers and sects who followed I Luther's wake to challenge the established religious ways. Plus, I concentrated on Zwingli, Calvin and the Anabaptists. I expounded upon the main differences between their religious interpretation and Luther's own positions.

Customer Review: Great basics
If you are a novice and looking to learn in a correct and structured way, these videos (Vol I & II) are very sound and easy to understand. The videos are introductory, so if you already know the basics, perhaps they are not for you. Don't pay attention to the criticism of those who weren't smart enough to read the description and look for more information about the videos from the internet or the instructors' website. The videos are clearly labeled basic. That's why they are titled "A Taste of...." I gave it four stars because even though the intent is to make the tapes universal by making them bilingual, it does tend to slow the lessons a bit. Why not use subtitles for the alternate language?

This has got to be one of the worst Salsa instructional videos I have purchased to date. For the price you get very little. It is repetative and annoying. You only learn 3 steps. I would definately not recommend this video to a beginner.

In looking to download music to a MP3 player the process is relatively easy once you learn the basics. First, you'll need to have all your connecting cables or docks, software and the music you want to download in place.

As not all portable devices are created equally, you may need your manual to tell you where to begin. If you find that you can't play particular songs on your MP3 player, it's most likely that it's DRM-protected. Digital Rights Management has a whole slew of limits and limited accesses, such as allowing certain files to play on iPods but not on Creative Zen players or RCA Lyras, and so on.

The simplest way around this is to download music only from the sites that are compatible with your portable device to ensure that you won't be wasting money buying downloadable music that you don't actually work on your MP3 player. More complicated methods could involve illegal activity, or breaking copy-right infringement laws, so tread carefully.

As stated before, getting music into a portable device follows a general procedure. And once you start to download music to a MP3 player you'll be amazed at how easy the entire process really is.

This is a MASSIVE book (262 pages!) of latin bass in all it's various styles. We are not talking simple repetive patterns here either, we are talking from moderate to complex lines with excellent notation and a top notch CD set behind it. If you want to learn Latin Bass, you can start here, and stop here, as you won't find more and better probably anywhere else. Although it is not a Real Book, You can think of that kind of setup and variety.
Customer Review: Good intro to latin bass playing
This book is well thought, thorough and enjoyable. Comes with 3 CDs that stand alone on their own, if you don't mind having bass on one side and the rest of the band on the other. This arrangement allows you to pan the track and play along with the band, or focus on the bass line only. I googled some of the guys who play with Oscar in these CDs and they are first rate musicians with impressive resumes (try Rebeca Mauleón). It comes with no tab, but the first bass lines are simple enough so it wouldn't be a bad place to start reading, and once you understand the beats and where the bassline falls, you should be in a good position to read almost anything! The book takes you to a series of concepts that become more complex from track to track in a well thought way, so you build on your understanding of the subject. Probably the hardest part is to keep yourself from dancing while you play along to the CDs! A good purchase.

XYZ: The Story Behind

James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 in Liverpool. He was the first son of Mary and James McCartney. His brother, Peter Michael McCartney, was born eighteen months later. Paul's mother was a midwife, who died from breast cancer in 1955 when Paul was just 14, this troubled Paul deeply. Paul's father was a cotton salesman during the day for A. Hannay Co., and a jazz musician with Jim Mac's Jazz Band at night. Paul did very well in school. He passed his 11-Plus examination in 1957 and entered the Liverpool Institute, a very popular high school. There, he met a younger student by the name of George Harrison whom Paul later brought with him into John's group, The Quarrymen. As a child, Paul showed no particular interest in music. Both he and his brother were sent to piano lessons, but these didn't last long. Then he was given a trumpet by an uncle, and he began to teach himself. His musical talent probably came from his father. Of all The Beatles, Paul's family was the only one with any musical background or interest. At the Liverpool Institute, Paul became popular. His dealings with young girls, however, had little effect on his grades. He was a top student, but he soon found that school was interfering with his social life. Like John and the others, Paul was influenced by early rock songs. Still, it was Elvis that formed the greatest impression on him. Paul first met John through a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan. Vaughan invited Paul to see The Quarrymen play at the Wooton Parish. c The Quarrymen, and Paul accepted. Paul's first public performance with The Quarrymen was at a dance at the Conservative Club in Broadway. Paul was supposed to play a solo that night, but for some reason, he never did. What he did do after the dance was play John some songs that he had written himself. John was impressed and later tried to write songs of his own. Neither wrote anything of much value, but the two began collaborating, each egging the other on to better works. From that day until the end of The Beatles, they never stopped, and together they became "Lennon & McCartney," one of the most renowned song writing duos of the twentieth century. Once they had become established songwriters, Paul and John would often write independently of one another. John's songs were more raw rock 'n' roll, while Paul's tended to be more romantic. Songs like "Yesterday," "Michelle," and "Lovely Rita" are typical McCartney songs. An early agreement between Paul and John assured that all Beatle songs that either wrote would bear the trademark of "Lennon & McCartney." Paul met Jane Asher at a pop concert at Albert Hall. She was then seventeen. The Radio Times asked her to go along to the concert to give her impressions of The Beatles. After the concert, she was invited back to their hotel for a drink. That night Paul and Jane spent the evening together. "I realized she was the girl for me," Paul once said. Jane, however, summed up her impression of the boys by exclaiming, "They couldn't believe I was a virgin. " Paul wanted Jane to give up acting to be with him constantly. She refused. This led to a number of arguments, but Paul was still attracted to her. It was for Jane Asher that he wrote "I'm Looking Through You" and "And I Love Her." In 1969 rumors started to spread that Paul was dead. Rumors of the death were exaggerated. No one knows for sure where the "Paul is Dead" rumor began. Some rumors were spread that Paul had been dead for three years and that he had been replaced by a look a like. Beatles fans everywhere looked for clues that were left intentionally in lyrics, record covers and pictures that would reveal the truth about the hoax.

The idea that Paul McCartney was dead for three years surfaced during the release of Abbey Road in September of 1969. The first indications of the hoax were printed in two Midwestern College newspapers (Iowas Drake University Times-Delphic and Northern Illinois Universitys Northern Star). Russel Gibb, a Detroit radio jock for WKNR FM read about the story in the college newspaper articles and invented new "clues" for listeners. Listeners called the radio station and claimed to be able to hear secret messages by playing Revolution #9 and other songs backwards. A walrus is a Greek symbol for death. In the song Glass Onion, John Lennon sings, "well heres another clues for you all, the walrus is Paul," which connected Paul to his "death".

According to one myth. Paul left the recording studio in anger, following a fight with the rest of the group. Paul stormed out of the studio, jumped into his car and sped off (I Buried P). All of the clues point to a car accident that reportedly happened prior to Paul leaving the studio in anger. On November 10, 1966 a British newspaper reported that on Wednesday morning at five oclock someone was involved in a car accident, according to the newspaper the accident was so bad that the body could not be identified in any way. In A Day In The Life, John Lennon sings, "he blew his mind out in a car, he didnt notice that the light had changed, a crowd of people stood and stared, theyd seen his face before, nobody was really sure if he was from the house of god (in the song god sounds like Paul)(I Buried P)

Many visual clues were on the Abbey Road LP. The media began reporting the joke as a fact as soon as it was released. The rumors began to grow larger. In October of 1969 McCartney himself made a public appearance in which he stated the breaking up of The Beatles. In a 1970 Rolling Stone interview with John Lennon, Lennon was asked if any of the hidden clues were supposed to have any meaning. Lennon replied, "No. That was bull. The whole thing was made up."

The Beatles enjoyed attention. They were jokers; maybe they were just having a little fun with their fans. Some people today still believe that Paul is dead because of the many convincing clues. No evidence shows that any of the members were behind the hoax. No one can prove that it did or didnt happen. The fact of the matter is that Paul is alive today. He is currently married to an ex-model. He is touring the concert world. And he is still a Living legend.

If your young ballerina, tap dancer or hip-hop performer starts to express more anxiety than excitement there are ways to help.

Firstly, you may be hearing expressions of natural stage fright, which almost everyone feels when the reality of opening night strikes - even if just for a few moments.

If you have a child that worries, let her/his teacher know that he/she needs encouragement as well as corrections. Remind your child of compliments regarding their dancing you may have overheard from the studio or stage area.

Some dance teachers like to provide each student with the music of their dances, so that they can practice mentally. When they are resting with their sore feet up at home, they can visualize and feel themselves performing, applying their corrections over and over. The earlier they learn this the better. It is a method that actually helps develop neural pathways and better performance. This is a great way to increase confidence, without getting exhausted, or spraining and straining muscles.

Having a couple of soft ice packs handy at home eases aches and pains.

For older children, remind them about good nutrition. While a lot of sugar can be a tranquilizer, it also weakens the muscles. And for many children sugar is an irritant and increases nervousness.

Fruit is a wonderful source of the minerals that get lost in excessive perspiring....and that, along with good water, is something that students can have with them during long rehearsal days. Replacing minerals and staying hydrated (frequent sips, don't wait until your throat is dry) also helps prevent muscle spasms.

Backstage volunteers can help by remaining cheerful and calm no matter what happens. If a child freezes up in the wings, deep breathing can remedy it. Practicing deep breathing is a good idea during staging rehearsals, while kids are in the wings waiting for their entrances.

Speaking of waiting... modern theaters are often chilly with air conditioning. Your child will need leg warmers, even sweats, to keep their muscles warm during the staging rehearsals.

Having them ready with everything they will need in the dressing room, with some Band Aids, a sewing kit, extra hair pins and nets - anything that could be suddenly required - will reassure a worrier that all angles are covered. Aside from that, it is a good professional habit to ingrain in aspiring dancers.

Natural stage fright turns into exhaltation when the performances are done and well received - and hopefully that won't wear off for a while. And parent volunteers get to share that with the joy of seeing their child close a year of hard work at the barre by getting to dance for you!
