Should You Try Dance Aerobics?

Many people really don't dance that much these days. This is probably especially true after getting married and having a family, just due to the sheer lack of free time.

Because of this many people feel very clumsy when they dance. So why do dance aerobics?

One of the simplest advantages is that many people find it fun. The music adds interest to an activity that might otherwise bore you. And moving to a rhythm encourages you to keep up with the group, to keep trying. It also just feels good.

As with any other aerobic exercise, dance aerobics is good for your metabolism. It gets your heart rate up and works your muscles. Some steps help with your balance.

As with any workout, your clothes should be comfortable and your shoes suited to the activity. It's always important to correctly support your feet during physical activity. In addition to being comfortable, your clothes should help to wick away sweat.

There are different levels of classes you can take at your local gym. Talk to the trainers and figure out which one is best for you. You don't want to take a class that will push you so hard that quitting makes more sense than continuing to try. A good trainer will be able to help you figure out which class you would like to take. And if the class doesn't suit your style, consider trying a different one. Just don't give up on the workout as a whole.

The other challenge is getting over your self consciousness. When you don't know the steps, it's easy to feel embarrassed and clumsy. It can help, however, to remember that everyone else started out not knowing the steps, and that most of your classmates are solely interested in their own workout.

Take your time in figuring out what works best for you. Some people need to listen to the instructor to figure out what to do. Others do fine just watching the steps. But especially as you're learning, don't demand of yourself the intensity your instructor may perform. They know you will be working out at your level, and you can work up to the full intensity over time.

A good dance aerobics class may be one of the most "fun" things you do at a gym if it's a good match for you. Enjoying your workout is one of the best ways to get yourself to keep going back.

Bongos And Congas - Drums With A Difference

If you are interested in beats, then you are sure to be interested in other instruments besides the usual drums that can give you the right beats. Well then let us discuss bongos and congas from the family of drums.

Bongo is a small version of drums. Actually it is a compilation of two open-ended drums. These two drums are joined with each other. Drum heads are normally made of animal skins, but plastic made drum heads are also available. The body is made of metal, wood and sometimes with ceramic also. Both the bongos are of different size. And for that reason each of them sounds different. You have to coordinate between both of them, to play it well.

A pair of simple bongos does not have those stretchable drum heads that can be tuned to play different notes from different parts. But the better quality bongos have this option. Their heads are adjustable. These heads are fixed firmly with metal made bars.

The way of playing bongos is very interesting. You have to use your finger strips, heel of your hand and thumbs. You need to strike the heads with the help of these hand parts. Striking different place of the head will produce different sound. Special drum oil is necessary to protect the head of the bongo. Otherwise your hand and the air will absorb all the moisture of the bongo skin. This will make the bongo skin dry. It can also pave way for cracks.

The best thing about bongo is that it is small, and not very much expensive. And if you know how to play it and if you have some friends who can play bongo, then you can form a band. If all of you play together some small groove then it will sound amazing.

Conga is almost like bongo. But it measures quite high in comparison to other drums. It is slim build and single headed. It is a Cuban drum but probably it is derived from Africa.

The shells of most of the congas are made of wood or fiberglass. The playing system of conga is almost like bongo. They are normally 75cm tall.

Congas are used in both popular and folk music. African music has a varied use of congas. This instrument is also very popular in Rumba, Afro Caribbean, Latin and salsa music.

Bongos and congas are almost similar kind of instrument. But former are smaller than latter. There sound is not totally similar but they are not that much different also.

Both are rhythm instruments. Their playing style is almost same. Both of them are very popular. They can be used in almost every kind of music.

But there are some difference between bongos and congas. Bongos are easy to carry. But congas are not. Both of them have a different look also. Congo just looks a bigger version of bongo usually. But if you watch closely and minutely, then you can trace the difference. But whatever is the difference is, it can be said that both bongos and congas are brilliant instruments. And both of them can change the way a particular song sounds.

Music Therapy and New Age Piano

If there were one genre of music that's perfect for music therapy, it would have to be New Age piano! Soothing and relaxing, the piano offers many benefits to those in need of respite. The wonderful thing about this style of music is that it's also easy to learn how to play!

A few chords, a scale, and you're able to make music. And not just any kind of music, but one that's conducive to alleviating stress. Let's look at how one might go about learning how to play piano in the New Age style.

First, it's best if you learn one chord position that will give you a nice modern sound right away. The open position chord structure accomplishes this. It's easy to learn and can be used by the beginner right away to make music with. And it uses both hands as well to cover more than 2 octaves of the piano keyboard!

Once this chord structure is practiced, it's time to add in a few chords. Just a few chords is all that is necessary for the beginning adult to experience the joy of improvisation. The hands are placed on the open position chord structure and the fingers move around creating melody. Nothing more is required than an openness to explore the possibilities.

And once students get started, they find that they can't stop playing. The therapeutic aspect of this comes from the free-form improvisations students are able to play only after a few minutes of practice. They begin to unwind, relax, and forget about the problems and cares of the day. It's a music therapy that goes one step above just listening to music.

Edward Weiss is a pianist/composer and webmaster of Quiescence Music's online piano lessons. Istanbul at Night - 7 Things to Do After the Sun Goes Down

You've spent the entire day exploring Istanbul's mosques, monuments and palaces. You've walked through the remnants of Constantinople and the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and you have the sore feet to prove it! You've returned to your quiet hotel room, had shower, rest and cup of Turkish tea. Now you're ready to hit the city again! But where to go in Istanbul after dark? Here are a few ideas on stepping out in Istanbul!

Bosphorus Cruise

If sore feet are a priority, enjoy an evening of food, drink and live music while cruising between Europe and Asia on one of the world's most magnificent waterways. Put your feet up as you cruise by dramatically lit mosques, palaces and under the city's soaring bridges. Spy on the night activity in the posh Bosphorus neighborhoods of Bebek and Ulus. The price includes a full dinner, drinks, an exciting floorshow with a Turkish belly dancer and round trip transfer from your hotel. Ask a local agency about availability.

Dinner with a View: Hamdi Restaurant

If you're in the mood for something local then head for Hamdi. Located just steps away from the Egyptian Spice Market, this popular place serves typical Turkish fare; hot grilled kebabs, small bowls of colorful mezes, crisp green salads and last, but certainly not least, Baklava! (Dubbed Turkish Viagra buy the locals!) But the real star of Hamdi is the view. Sit on the top terrace and take in views of Galata, the Bosphorus and the magnificent mosques of Eminonu.

Balik Sokak

Just steps away from the Marmara Sea, Balik Sokak (Fish Street) comes alive at dusk with lively restaurants serving fresh fish, meze, raki and lots of beer. Expect live music, impromptu singing and dancing performed by tipsy Turkish men with big mustaches!

Nevizade Sokak

Just off the Beyoglu Balik Pazari (Beyoglu Fish market) and Cicek Pasaji, Nevizade Sokak is a narrow street chock full of bars and outdoor restaurants. The restaurants offer meze, meals and musicians at your table; the bars offer stools where you can park, people watch and enjoy a chilled Efes beer. Some of the bars have terraces on the roof, of course every waiter will swear blind that his bar's terrace is more beautiful than the next guy's! Most places have a fixed-price menu, so ask for prices in advance.

Turkish Night

If you're a fan of music or dance, then a check out an evening "Turkish Night" dinner show, featuring traditional song, dance and costumes from the four corners of Turkey. Favorites include the fast spinning and stomping of the energetic Black Sea Dancers and the mesmerizing whirling of of the famed whirling dervishes. The evening belongs, however, by the lovely belly-dancing ladies who can show you a move or two! Book early at a local agency for good seats. Again, ask at a local agency about shows as they vary in price and program. Full dinner, drinks and transportation to and from your hotel are included in the price.

Nargile Cafe

Corlulu Ali Pasa Narghile Cafe was built in 1709, and is a well-known atmospheric water-pipe (nargile) place near Beyazit, (just 2 tramway stops from Sultanahmet stop, or a short stroll along the tramline.) This lovely hidden spot is where you can try a waterpipe or just relax and enjoy the exotic aroma of an apricot Narghile while sipping Turkish tea or coffee. Kittens will play at your feet. Old men will play backgammon. A great place to unwind after a trip to the nearby Grand Bazaar. The cafe serves a variety of tea, soft drinks and Turkish coffee.

Sultanahmet Hot Spots
Looking for an after diner drink not too far from your hotel? In Sultanahmet, grab a cocktail, raki, Efes Beer or glass of wine at...

Sah Bar: Hidden away from the main Tramway Street, this bar is rocking the alley in the summer, and warm and intimate by the fireplace in the winter. Cosy decor and great music.

Akbayik Street: There are a few bars that go all night long on this street. Check out "Just Bar", popular with locals and backpackers. Great outdoor seating.

The North Shield: Located just off the Gulhane tramway station one stop away from Sultanahmet. More expensive than the first two, but a great place to watch a football match.

The Joy of Flow

Want more "flow" in your life? Want to have marvelous opportunities automatically present themselves to you? Want to see your dreams become reality without so much as a request or a prayer for help? Want to be led to benevolent outcomes more often? Want to have more joy in your life as you allow your life purpose to unfold?

A friend of mine did not like her job. It required long hours away from home, work during the weekends, standing on her feet and provided only a modest living, which was quickly diminishing in a recession industry.

Her husband was inspired to suggest as a remedy she seek work for a local city government. "Great," she thought, "I know no one in the government. How can I find a job like that? My experience is primarily sales. I don't type or have any office skills." However, she mentioned her idea to a friend. Coincidentally her friend just happened to know for 40 years the Vice Mayer of a local town nearby. He asked for my friend's resume.

My friend quickly went about the task of preparing it with a cover letter. She asked another dear friend for help. This friend coincidentally happened to have researched everything about this particular town for an unrelated project. It turned out this town was building a huge entertainment complex including an upscale Hard Rock Caf, a Seminole Indian Casino and many other commercial projects. This was a well-funded project planned to continue for at least 10 years.

It became evident that working for a local government made more sense than originally thought possible.

This is an example of "flow." Flow is the process of allowing your good to come to you after you have asked for help. It is not a passive state of waiting for something to happen, but rather an active state of co-creation with the heavenly powers that be. It is the give and take between wanting something and allowing something to happen.

When things seem to fall into place in this intuitive way your life is in "flow." Flow is associated your life purpose. In order to discover your life purpose you have to allow yourself to be led. You have to allow life to flow through you, and allow the doors to open that will. You have to "go with the flow."

Opening intuitively is an ongoing exercise, not easily learned by some, completely natural to others. For those that would like more intuition in their lives try this.

1. Relax. Take time to relax every day and give into a little daydreaming. Perhaps you can get to sit or walk in nature. Being soothed and calmed is integral to the intuitive process. The key to relaxing is that you make it feel as good as possible. Try to do it without the TV, a book or the media. As much fun as these activities are, they tend to fill you up. Intuitive development relaxing allows nature and spirit to flow through you in moments of reflection and just being.

2. Create. Creativity and intuition are integrally linked. The more you allow yourself to creatively flow in a task the more your window to the divine opens and the greater your ability to channel the mystical energies of life through yourself. If you have not tried taking up a creative hobby start now. All forms of creativity including, but not limited to, art, dance, music, crafts, marketing and even sports offer benefits far more than simply the product of the act itself.

3. Love your moments and love yourself in those moments. Learning how to accept each moment in your life as meant to be, as laden with overt and hidden gifts, provides for you the launching pad to expansion. Simply put, going with the flow, allows the flow to come to you. When you are battling everything in every moment, the river of your life and your purpose gets jammed with huge logs and boulders. Love your life and yourself. This one step alone will bring miracles before you.

Creating a life you love is easy so long as you learn how to let go and flow. Remember to ask for what you want and then take inspired action. Be alert and wait for signals. Soon you will be on your way to a new life paradigm. One in which you create with the partner called "Universal Flow."

Laura Bartolini Mendelsohn is The "Intuitive Magic" Coach, a five star rated psychic with inherited talent and over 40 years metaphysic experience. We Cheer For Wii Cheerleading Games

A few companies are combining the new balance detection of the Wii Fit Balance Board and motion detection of the Wii remotes to create the first Cheerleading games for the Wii.

Below are two of the first Cheerleading games ever created on the Wii, We Cheer and All Star Cheer Squad. These two games are primarily targeted at younger girls which isn't that common in the video game world. The new cheer leading games will also make extensive use of the Wii Fit Balance Board to detect steps and moves and also heavily rely on the motion detection controls of the Wii Remotes to detect hand movements, spins, kicks and poses.

We Cheer
One of the first cheerleading games coming out will be Wii Cheer release date unknown right now, created by Namco. We Cheer takes a fun customizable approach to this new genre, the game looks like it will offer a lot of different options so each person playing can have a unique experience.

The game uses real songs from some of the hottest music stars from teen sensations like Hilary Duff and Aly and AJ to the 70s disco bands. We Cheer also allows you to customize your cheerleaders outfit which some people can spend hours doing. The game contains multiple modes depending on how you're feeling. You can chose to burn calories in Exercise Mode or compete for the Captian position with a friend in 2 player Campaign Mode. You can even battle it out with up to 4 players in Party Mode to find out who is the best cheerleader.

We Cheer Features:

* Hit Songs - Dance and cheer to the hottest music from artists of the past, present and future.

* Endless Character Customization - Create the perfect competition outfit.

* Engaging Modes - Exercise Mode, Campaign Mode, Party Mode.

* Really Addictive Gameplay - Spin, kick, jump and dance to various choreographed routines.

All Star Cheer Squad
Another Cheerleading game coming out is All Star Cheer Squad release date October 20, 2008, created by THQ. All Star Cheer Squad pulls out all the stops and takes more of a "cheerleading experience" simulation approach. In this game you actually follow a year in the life of a cheerleader. You'll learn new cheers, participate in the practices and even create your own routines to make the squad and eventually become captain.

This game also seems to take a serious direction with the dancing, the choreography is done by Tony G. who also choreographed the movie Bring It On! So you can definitely expect your child to get a workout.

All Star Cheer Squad Features:

* Use the Wii Fit Board to balance and perform stunts

* Use the Wii remote and nunchuck to perform dozens of real-world cheer/dance moves

* Compete in squad and one-on-one cheer-offs

* Customize the look of your team including body, facial features, hair and outfits

* Learn new moves and choreograph your own cheer routines to music

This adds to a new wave of exercise games for the Wii Fit. While these games are not completely targeted towards exercise, you can see how they would give you a good workout.

There also aren't that many "girl games" on the market but with these two Cheerleading games coming out expect people to really start to take a look into the genre, especially if these cheerleading games do well which I think they will.

American Idol Is Draining the Life Out of Popular Culture

In the 1920s when radio was first catching on, the idea of a popular culture was somewhat different than what we have today. For there to be a pop-culture, there needs to be a way for media to reach the masses. Up until then, the extent of popular media was done in print, and was limited to those who could read and had the time to do so. But, with the invention of moving pictures and the breakthroughs in mass producing personal radios, the concept of bringing a single product to an entire nation was born and with it the concept of pop-culture.

At first it was simple, big bands and radio shows in the afternoons. The country fell in love with Bogart, Bergman, and Garland and people all over the world were watching and worshipping the same cultural scions. The voices of popular music and the face of the movies were everywhere and along with the collective feeling of involvement, of a mass consumption that the world had never seen before.

Television soon followed suit and multiplied it all ten fold, along with affordable record players, the invention of cassettes, VHS tapes, and the computer. These days the availability of mass media is such that pop-culture is the only culture we have anymore. If you ask anyone on the street what cultural icon they most respect, theyll most likely offer up Eminem, Tom Cruise, or if theyre a little older the Beatles. But even the Beatles are a product of that pop-culture machine thats been churning since the dawn of the last century, diluting what we consume each and every day to the point of watching grown men and women fight in pits of mud and scorpions for $10,000 in prize money.

The idea that anyone would consciously compare the likes of Survivor and Desperate Housewives with Hemingway and Rembrandt is partially if not wholly disturbing when you think about it. The cultural output of todays society is strictly commercial. Thats not that there isnt decent music being produced, films made, and art created the world over every day, but less and less it is possible to dig through the slough of viral videos and 24 novelizations to find them.

Which brings me to the greatest cultural lesion of them all, born not quite five years ago. Yup, thats right. It hasnt even been five years yet. The summer after the quintessential defining event of this generation, there came another defining event, something which I hope every year (and find myself less willing to believe) will not be remembered as vividly as 9/11, the series premier of American Idol. I was fresh out of High School and had just moved out of my parents home.

I was staying with friends in a suburb of Seattle and on that fateful June evening in 2002 I watched as a few thousand poor souls made fools of themselves in the highly produced, quality free rehearsal space in front of three withered remnants of the music industry; the man who brought us the Spice Girls, a long since washed up drunk dance queen, and the guy who played bass on tracks for Madonna. These three at the same time tore apart, offered support and flung superfluous slang at awful and amazing singers alike in what Ive never been convinced is not a fully scripted three minute sequence.

The first season or two of the show were cultural phenomena. By the third season, the American Idol voting got almost as many votes in a single season as a presidential election, and ten times the viewership. Every teenager, washed up singer, and creepy old guy watched with intense interest as these poor kids sang their hearts out (granted, they have talent) for cheap poppy fluff that will sell.

God forbid you win the whole thing, as the promise of record contract also means youre eternally tied at the hip to Cowells production company and the overwhelming percentage they suck dry from your earnings. And these singers make money lots of it. The 20 million or more viewers watching for 10 plus weeks, are more than a little willing to pay for the album they watched the development of. Its marketing genius, and its destroying popular culture in the same way popular culture destroyed actual culture.
Theres no denying the popularity of the program, or the talent of the eventual finalists. But, this year especially, theres a certain feeling of production in every scene thats always been there. It pervades every audition. If you have a friend whos auditioned, and the odds are after six seasons of auditions you probably do, youll know that they only take a very small percentage of the 30,000 people that show to an audition to see the Big 3. And what do we see on tv? About 80% godawful singers. They purposefully pull these people from line, give them a disclosure agreement to sign and send them in to be knowingly torn apart by a smarmy Briton.

Better yet, since William Hung made his horrific appearance into a career, these lost souls go with the sole intention of being mocked mercilessly in hopes of finding fame in their poor performance. This year though, it went a little too far as a young man was berated for his weight and poor singing by the entire crew of judges only to later find out that he was mildly autistic. And they aired it.

These kids are throwing away their pride and dignity for the hopes that they can find fame in the sole fact that they were yelled at on American Idol. Its not only sad, its the most popular television program of the decade, and every year it gets more viewers. For shows like Arrested Development to go off the air and on the same network, millions tune in to watch an overweight autistic teen try his best to sing God Bless America and get degraded by the meanest (and Im banking that hes on script 90% of the time) man on television for the viewing pleasure of the increasingly brain dead masses around the world is sickening.
There was a time in the 80s when the music industry started ramping up its production in a box theory of output, not new to the industry but increasingly prevalent. There was a time when musicians used to get offended at being called mass produced and created. Now, its a part of the game. If you arent pushed through the blender of studio primping and preening, paraded across the national spotlight for approval, youre not ready to be the next it girl or guy.

For anyone who actually listens to music for intelligent lyrics or watches films or television for good writing, and social importance, shows like American Idol are only one more nail in the coffin of intellectual thought and culture. Pop culture can be intelligent. Thats been shown in the past few decades more than once, and it can become cultural with age (I point to The Beatles again), but American Idol will never be either of these and only serves to lubricate the downward spiral into cultural emptiness.

I'm a self avowed unemployed writer, working on semi-constant basis to try and overcome the need to go and work a real job. I've written more than 200 articles and reviews and am constantly scouring the internet for any and all excuses and methods to make myself less dependent on corporate pay days. Confident and Radiant- 5 Sure-Fire Ways

With just a sprinkle here, and a dash there, you can awaken your inner confidence in no time. The best part: there is already a treasure of confidence within you. Its in there, waiting. This is just an invitation to wake up and feel it. Confidence is a state of mind. Sexiness is simply how you feel as your glowing, confident self. Use these tips to bring out your most confident self.
Here they are: 5 sure-fire ways to help you REALIZE your beautiful glow.

1. Embrace you body. Everyone has a favorite body part. Maybe its your eyes, or your thighs, or your hands or your breasts. Maybe its your rump, or your lips, or yourwhatever. Embrace your favorite part by accentuating this part with how you dress and care for yourself. Serenade yourself with confidence once you learn your favorite part. This is a magical attribute, which deserves some light to be shone on it. Focus on the good, and the rest will soon fall in place.

2. Dance. Use music to unleash your confidence beast. Shes in there. Shes waiting to get out. Dance her out. You can dance like no ones watching or dance like everyones watching. Its up to you. You can follow your inner diva to create a unique dance made solely by you, or utilize the many sources the web has to offer by self-teaching yourself new moves of belly dancing, hip-hop or interpretive dance. Embrace your body as you move. Treat your body as an art as you swerve your way to your newfound confidence.

3. Give Compliments Freely. Other women you meet may have confidence issues, too. Infact, it is likely. And the strangest thing is that even the most beautiful, skinny, likeable women have self-esteem issues. Confidence is an attribute, which must come from within. Without it, you will never feel pretty enough, thin enough, or good enough. If you start giving compliments to other women, you are leading by example. We are in this together. We can learn to be beautiful together. Say goodbye to the days where other women are competition. The most confident women know it is sexy to give compliments and embrace the beauty in everyone.

4. Love your body now. Dont wait until its 15 (or 5 or 50) pounds lighter; dont wait until you get your new haircut or give yourself a manicure. Although it is important to take care of our selves, so many women see it as a precursor to loving our selves. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If you love your body now, you will intuitively know what else needs to be done to remain healthy and vibrant. Yes, perhaps you do need that massage after a killer week at work. No, most likely you dont need that nose job if you can fully embrace your unique God-given look as an original woman in her own sexy skin.

5. Dont point out your flaws. If I constantly said: I have such a flabby gut. Ughh, I hate my stomach. Look at these rolls Well, guess where you will soon be looking? Yep, you guessed it: my flabby rolls. Stop bringing attention to these not-so-favorite areas. Go back to rule #1. Embrace your body. If you have trouble with this rule, please continue to check back with rule #1. Embrace, embrace, embrace.

As you can see these five ideas are fairly simple. But how often do we forget to embrace our bodies and shine from within? Use these ideas to stay on top of your confidence game. In no time, youll get be confident and radiant and youll be soaring to new heights of beauty from your treasure of inner confidence.

The Perfect Music For Your Wedding Day

The wedding ceremony is very important on this momentous occasion and using live music can give the ceremony a unique perspective to the wedding. A ceremony that has no music or a wedding ceremony that does not have the appropriate music may work out but it will not have that romantic feel and it will feel lifeless.

The wedding ceremony is the more serious part of the wedding while the reception in the grand celebration which congratulates the couple on their marriage. There are 2 general types of music available for a modern wedding, they are a DJ or live musicians. A DJ is a person who plays CDs through a sound system at your reception and provides stage lighting for additional effect. The advantage to hiring a live band for your reception is that there is a certain synergy that occurs when live musicians perform together that cannot be achieved with a DJ, and live musicians can are also able to adapt to the vibe of the room playing faster, slower, louder or softer depending on the preferences of you and your guests.

Unless, of course, you're determined to have a band sing at your wedding. One of the critical steps during wedding music planning is to decide the type of music to be played, and who will perform it, a live band or a DJ. Regardless of a live band or a DJ, your goal is to hire the right person(s) for the job to enliven your wedding.

A four or five-piece band with a small PA system is generally required if the party is 100 or more. Listen to recordings of the band performing live, where available. If the band is having fun on stage, so will you on the dance-floor. You need a band that wants to party as much as you do.

Here are some tips you can use when you choose music for your wedding. When choosing the music for your wedding make sure you choose something that you and your guests will dance to. Experienced musicians are able to play songs that will be appropriate to the wedding even if you dont know what songs to choose from.

If there is no theme and you are having trouble choosing the song this means you will have many choices to choose from. Why not walk down the aisle to an appropriate pop song or soundtrack from a favorite movie or musical. Choosing music for your wedding you need to find a piece that stands apart from other music.

Many people are still using traditional bridal songs, but many are not because most want to walk down the isle to music that fits their personalities.

There should be songs that are exciting and that will make the guests get up and dance. During the first dance of the wedding most people never forget how their spouses looked. The most enjoyable part of the wedding reception is the dance music. When choosing dance music for your wedding, you need to decide if you want the services of a DJ or a band for your wedding.

When your marriage is over many grooms and brides can recall the songs that were played at their wedding are able to relive the day they were married. There are so many wonderfully romantic and very suitable songs available today.

Stepping Gains Popularity From Hollywood

You can always tell that a dance form is gaining popularity when you see it on the silver screen. When the Brazilian dance Lambada was the craze, there was actually a movie titled "Lambada" in1989. Patrick Swayze's "Dirty Dancing" popularized a forbidden dance of the same name.

Some other dance movies are:

"Flashdance" (1983) Breakdancing movie

"Saturday Night Fever" (1977) Disco movie

"Fame" (1980) Jazz movie

"The Turning Point" (1977) Ballet movie

"Staying Alive" (1983) Jazz movie

"Footloose" (1984) New Wave movie

Though there are a lot more that could be mentioned, it cannot be denied that most of these movies help disseminate information on the chosen dance topic. For a dance to be featured on film is a good thing no matter what critics say.

It appears the dance form Stepping is also getting widescreen attention. Here are some of the movies on this African American art form:

"School Daze" (1988) musical-drama film, written and directed by Spike Lee, and starring Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tisha Campbell.

Based in part on Spike Lee's experiences at Atlanta's Morehouse College, it is a story about fraternity and sorority members clashing with other students at a historically black college during homecoming weekend. This was the second feature film directed by Spike Lee, and was released on February 12, 1988 by Columbia Pictures.

"Stomp the Yard" (2007) drama film produced by Rainforest Films and released through Sony Pictures' Screen Gems division on January 12, 2007.

Directed by Sylvain White, Stomp the Yard centers around DJ Williams, a college student at a fictional historically Black university who pledges to join a fictional Greek-letter fraternity. The film's central conflict involves DJ's fraternity competing in various stepping competitions against a rival fraternity from the same school. The film's script was written by Robert Adetuyi, working from an original draft by Gregory Ramon Anderson. The film was originally titled Steppin', but to avoid confusion over the 2006 film Step Up, the title was changed.

"How She Move" (2008) Canadian film directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid and starring Rutina Wesley, Cl Bennett, and Romina D'Ugo. The film showcases the emerging street culture of step dancing and the talents of a new generation of Canadian-born actors. The film is produced by Celluloid Dreams, Sienna Films and MTV Films.

Motion pictures through the years reflect the way things were and are at the time of filming. The 1930s depression produced movies on how hard life was, the '70s showed movies on promiscuity, abortion, war and other social issues of the time, and so on.

Because Stepping is a continuously growing art form, documenting it at a certain period in time helps record its progress and changes.

Though most practitioners of this dance would say that these movies didn't do full justice to this art form, the message all these films are trying to relay is the same: Stepping is part of African American culture and is a part of the here and now.

MyStepShow.com is a free video sharing community website that features step team performances. Members can post and share video footage of their stepteam performances. Visit http://www.MyStepShow.com to learn more about the tradition of stepping.

The Musicians First Aid Kit

Gigging is probably one of the most enjoyable activities a musician can experience. There is always something special about performing in front of a live audience. The sound of a crowds appreciation when you have just ripped up the stage with a great performance of your best tunes. There is just nothing like it. But what happens when things dont go exactly as planed? And what happens when things fail miserably? If you have ever gigged I am sure you are familiar with Murphy law: If things can go wrong, they probably will. I have had experiences like: amps blowing up, guitar strings breaking, stolen fuses in my amp, bad cords, out of tune guitars, ect... These things happen to all bands and what makes the difference between a professional and an amateur is how you deal with these problems. You need to do some preplanning and put together a a Musicians First Aid Kit. When a problem does occur, you will be prepared to quickly fix the problem and get on with your show.

Guitar/Bass Strings

Get at least one extra set for each guitar or bass you have at the gig. If you pop a string you will be prepared to replace it. Remember this golden rule for guitars and basses: Never step on stage without a properly tuned backup guitar or bass. If you have any problems with your main ax all you have to do is pick up your backup and fix the problem on your next break.

Cords

Get a complete second set of cords. This includes patch cords and mike cables.

Batteries

Go through all of your gear and make a note of all of the batteries you use. Get backups for everything and make sure the backups dont sit and go dead before you replace them. Consider some type of preventative maintenance schedule so you can keep track how long batteries are in use and when they need replacement. Dont forget about the guitar tuner!

Fuses

Again go through all of your gear and make a note of all the proper sizes of your fuses. Get some type of small segregated box and label the top with the current ratings for the fuses (1A, 5A ect...). Never put a fuse that has a higher current rating in your amp or gear. There is a reason the manufacture put that size fuse in your system. Never, Never wrap a fuse with tin foil to bypass it! If your fuses keeps blowing, you have a short in this gear and by putting a larger fuse or bypassing it all together you may completely blow it up which will will cost you plenty to repair. Also I should mention that by bypassing your fuse you run the risk of electrocuting yourself! Never under any circumstanceses bypass your fuses!

Drummers

Get a spare snare drum. If your snares let go just replace the whole drum with the spare and repair your main snare at break. Bring many extra sticks. I played with a drummer once that didnt bring enough sticks to a gig one night. He had to play the last half of our set with a screwdriver! Needless to say he had to replace all of his drum heads after this gig! Bring some spare hardware and also get another kick drum pedal. Some spare drum heads are always a good idea and make sure to bring a set of tools.

Keyboard Players

What would happen if your main synth went out? Maybe you could program your second synth with similar sounds. I know it wont be perfect but it will get you through the gig.

Singers

Do you have a spare mic? If not you should pick one up. I recommend a Sure 58. They are not very expensive and are reliable for a great backup if not a main mic.

Horn Players

Since I dont play horns I cant comment too much however I can recommend that you think about what could go wrong with your instrument. What could you do if it failed during a gig? Again a backup might be a good idea.

Amps

If you use an amp in your performance and it fails what could you do? A small spare is a good idea. Guitar players can use a guitar processor as a backup amp and it can be plugged directly into the PA. Again I know this wont sound perfect but it will get you through the gig. Bass players have it easy if their amps go out. Plug directly into the PA. If you play bass you may want to consider buying a direct box specifically for that purpose. Same goes for keyboard players, plug directly into the PA with a DI box

All Bands

Always have plenty of duct tape! This stuff can get you out of some major jams!

I have not covered everything that can go wrong with your gear at a show but hopefully this will spark some ideas of the things that you can do if your gear fails. Put together your Musicians First Aid Kit in some sort of tool box or fishing tackle box. If you are prepared when things go wrong at your gigs (and believe me they will) it is no big deal. If you are not prepared you will look like an amateur and remember you never know who is out in the audience watching. Good luck and happy gigging!

What You Should Know About Free Movie Downloads

With all of the entertainment download sites out there that offer FREE movies, music, games etc., those tempting offers of free downloading and sharing have you wondering which site is the best, but first and foremost one should use caution in choosing, since many of these Peer to Peer sites are free but also illegal and dangerous to the health of your computer.

Wondering Why? I'll explain below. So please read on!

Peer to Peer (P2P) Networks are basically computers on the same network with certain software sharing files for free. The problem with this, although tempting concept, is that you may also be sharing Malware, Viruses, Spyware that can damage your computer, not to mention you can get into some big trouble downloading copyrighted material.

If you do frequent p2p sites for downloading your movies and music and whatever else, anti-virus software should help in holding off any worms or viruses but with no guarantee. You would still be risking your computer to infection and or damage. You would also be adding to some real disturbance in the entertainment business with big fines and big court costs for illegal distribution of copyrighted material, sometimes known as Bootlegging.

There are alternatives that are safe and legal.... membership sites offer this alternative, no worries for just a low one time fee. A good membership site also will not charge you a pay per download fee or even monthly fee just a one time fee with unlimited downloads. Yet there are many to choose from also. Just please do your research and learn as much as you can about the website you are considering and the software they are using for file sharing, this is crucial. We have done some research for you and reviewed a number of sites that are a few of the best out there, but most of all, Legal and Safe...no worries.

In your quest finding something that is right for you there are some other considerations that come to mind. Download speed, even from the best site is mostly dependent on your internet connection, Dialup vs. DSL vs. Highspeed Cable and on it goes. But with a good download accelerator software program most connections should work fine. Another tip would be your hard drive space, meaning the room needed to store all your favorite movies, music, and whatever else. That can be cured by burning copies onto the media of your choice CD, DVD, External HD and deleting the original off the drive or install a hard drive with more space.

If your still reading, I just want to say thanks for your time and sticking with me this far and hopefully this article was of some help to you.

Sincerely J. D.

Beijing Opera - History and Characters

The Beijing Opera, with its distinctive Chinese opera masks, is one of China's most recognizable cultural icons. Combining Music, Dance, Theatre, and Martial Arts, it has existed for over 200 years portraying Historical Events and Literature with beauty, style, and dynamic performance. It is most prominent in Beijing, but almost every Province in China has some form of Opera theatre. With its elaborate costuming, complex musical orchestrations and seemingly limitless Make-up and Mask designs, the Beijing Opera is seeing revitalization in popularity with both young and mature audiences.

What is now called the Beijing Opera originally came from a combination of several sources. In about 1790, four great theatre troupes from Anhui came to perform for the Royal Family. They brought arias and melodies called Xi Pi. Around 1828, performers from Hubei came to the same area and staged combined shows adding their local pieces of music called Er Huang. These performances were for the Royals but soon were to become more mainstream during Emperor Qianlong's reign as well as support from the notorious Empress Dowager Ci Xi. During this time, thousands of pieces of repertoire were developed covering the historical events, classic novels and stories of China as well as revisions of Western stories.

There are four basic categories of characters in the Beijing Opera style.

SHENG- The main Male actors in a performance. Either civil or military, there are several different aspects of training for the various lead male parts.

i. LAO SHENG- Senior Male roles, middle aged man with beard of black, grey or white. A soft or pleasant voice with dignity.

ii. XIAO SHENG- Junior male role or young man. No beard and a high sometimes shrill voice that may, on occasion, crack denoting immaturity and adolescence.

iii. WU SHENG- Acrobatic male roles or roles that require much activity. Military plays or civil plays that demand high standards of acrobatics. Performs the stylized martial arts fight scenes with sword or spear. Not usually trained as opera singer.

iv. WAWA SHENG- Kids and children roles. DAN- Female roles of several categories.

i. QING YI ( Ch'ing I)- Lady of good character. Quiet gentle disposition. Graceful flowing movements in "water sleeves" costume. Elegant but not vivid. Singing voice is high pitched.

ii. HUA DAN ( Hua Tan)- Flirtatious young girl role. Usually not as high a social standing as Qing

Yi. Coy and quick movements. A very difficult part to play. Attractive eye movements and continually changing facial expression. Vivid costume featuring handkerchief to flutter in her hand. Strong voice but more speaking than singing.

iii. GUI MEN DAN (Kuei Men Tan) - Young unmarried girl. This role may turn into Qing Yi or Hua Dan. Mischievous but not as much as Hua Dan. Immature reactions and movements.

iv. DAO MA DAN (Tao Ma Tan) - Female Warrior role. Trained for acting and singing but
performs highly skillful martial movements often with feathered headdress. Still a very feminine role. The now famous role of Disney's "MULAN" was based on Hua Mulan who disguised herself as a man to prevent her father from being conscripted into the military. She served for 12 years during the SouthNorth Dynasty and was decorated as a national hero.

v. WU DAN (Wu Tan) - Female Acrobatic roles. Steps in on any role that requires high acrobatic ability. Purely an acrobat but role can demand a talented actress to make for a successful performance.

vi. CAI DAN (Cai Tan) - Female Comedians. Serves to add relief to stressful scenes in serious plays. See also CHOU roles.

JING- Painted face male roles. These parts are known more for courage and resourcefulness than for scholarly intelligence. Often a high-ranking general or warrior/official. Jing actors are usually extroverts. A robust, sometimes gruff, bass voice. Full of swagger and self-assurance. There are many common color schemes associated with Jing roles but some of the more common are easily recognizable.

v Red- Good character and virtuous person.

v White- Treacherous and guile

v Green-Lack of self-control, rash, stubbornness

v Black- Brusque character

v Blue- Wild perhaps a Robber

v Gold/Silver- Used only for Gods and Spirits

The facial painting patterns also give information about a character. There are hundreds of patterns and designs for many situations and roles.

There are 3 main types of Jing roles:

i. DONG-CHUI- (T'ung Ch'uei) Also know as Hei Tou (Black Face) this role is a good singer and usually a loyal General

ii. JIA ZI- (Chia Tze) - A very good actor for more complicated characters.

iii. WU JING- Fighting and acrobatics. Seldom plays a prominent role.

CHOU- Comedy Roles. Dim but likable and amusing characters. Sometimes slightly wicked perhaps a rascal or a scholar/Prince who would not command much respect. There are two basic types of Chou roles:

i. WEN CHOU- Civilian roles.( Jailer, servant, merchant, scholar)

ii. WU CHOU- Minor Military roles but skilled in acrobatics

Of special mention should be the popular role of SUN WU KONG -The Monkey King.

This is a famous story of a Monks journey from China to India to collect scriptures to bring back to China... He is usually accompanied by a Pig for comedic effect, a not-so-learned monk to mediate the many quarrels and the Monkey King. This is played by a Wu Sheng actor. Known for the bent knees and an arms forward stance that imitate monkey movements. He has mastered Longevity, the 72 transformations of his physical body and can do somersaults in the clouds. Sun Wu Kong is followed by a troupe of monkeys who behave in the same manner but have individual personalities (greedy, naughty, sleepy, etc.). The Monkey King continues to be one of the most popular story lines in all of Chinese Opera Theatre.

The Opera Theatre form suffered during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) when all traditional pieces were banned. New versions became stories concerning "Class Struggle". The "Eight Model Plays" were a very popular theme, as were stories concerning Communist Activities, Anti-Japan sentiment, and the Civil War against Nationalists. The traditional stories were allowed to be shown in 1978 but by then they seemed out of date and the productions lacked historical and theatrical knowledge. Audiences lost to more contemporary forms of entertainment were hard to replace with the exception of those who were children when the Beijing Opera was at its peak. Many who lived through the Cultural Revolution preferred the newer versions and still favor those melodies.

Campaigns exist to bring back this lost art from as well as other Theatrical Arts. The Plum Blossom Award, sponsored by the Chinese Opera Journal, gives awards, judged by the Journal, to new artists. The actors and actresses must be under 45 years of age and come from all over China. These and other competitions are seen on the CCTV, China's main television network and radio stations, particularly during the New Years special concerts. There has even been designated a Beijing Opera Month.

In recent years, performances worldwide of Beijing Opera theatre have brought this marvelous art form to broader audiences. It has served as ambassador to the West providing many new opportunities for people to enjoy a performance style that rivals any of the Grand Operas and Symphonies of Europe and North America.

Finally! Inexpensive Tech Toys That Encourage Education And Exercise!

Theres no doubt that tech is projected to be big for the 2007 Christmas gift season. Anything that can be plugged in or turned on is cool in the eyes of children. And children are becoming tech-savy at a much younger age. If you haven't taken a look at kids' toys lately, you may well be suprised. Even baby toys mimic adult technology. Toddler toy laptops, cell phones and digital cameras all popular toys today.

But not all parents embrace that trend, thinking that expensive technical toys for small children encourages computer-addicted couch potatoes. Many parents long for the classic toys of their own youth - the simple bicycle, Mr. Potato Head, or a simple wooden train. The problem is, most kids are exposed to the high tech toys somewhere - in school, visiting the homes of others, or in the media - so the old stand-bys don't seem as exciting today, and in the eyes of our children, are quite dated.

And, with childhood obesity on the rise, parents have a hard time embracing toys that encourage children to veg in the front of a computer or TV screen. We welcome inexpensive toys that combine technology (because it's not going away) with classic learning and exercise. Some toymakers have answered our call. Here are five inexpensive, fun and popular toys that combine tech with exercise and learning.

1. Fisher-Price Smart Cycle: The Fisher-Price Smart Cycle combines exercise, education, and video game-type fun all into one toy. This toy is a bike that attaches to your TV. Your child has to petal the bike in order to play the game and steers handlebars that actually move. In essence, children are getting exercise and learning coordination while in video game nirvana. The games included are educational and allow your child to pursue alphabet letters, take a trip to math mountain, and explore shape lake. Fischer Price also offers software with favorite TV characters (like Sponge Bob, Barbie and Dora) so your child doesnt get bored. Priced at about $90, its the most expensive toy on this list, but still pretty cheap by tech standards.

2. LeapFrog 100 Hoops Basketball Counting Game: This is the only childs basketball game that teaches number recognition and counting (all the way to 100 in both English and Spanish). It features built-in rally and cheering sounds to encourage your child to exercise while he learns regular and skip counting (by 5s and 10s) to 100. The game is completely portable and can he attached to a chair, wall, or door knob or can be taken outside and hung on a tree. Priced under $25.

3. Leap Frog Leap Learn & Groove Alphabet Drum: Its no wonder this toy was winner of the 2006 iParenting Media Greatest Products Award. Priced at under $15, this toy not only encourages physical activity, rhythm and fine motor development, it also teaches language and music. It has two programs. Children can either simply make music with it, or it can be programmed to display or speak letters of the alphabet to encourage early letter recognition.

4. Discovery Exclusive Ready Set Learn! Jump & Dance Music Mat: This item is among the Discovery Stores best sellers. This toy allows your child to exercise by dancing and hoping, while it also encourages problem solving, creative play skills, and fine motor skills. Kids can chose to either dance to their own routines while the music follows their moves or they can repeat pre-programmed routines which light up with every move. This item is under $30.

5. Leap Frog Learn & Groove Counting Maracas: Similar to the above mentioned Alphabet Drum, the counting maracas operate on the same principal of children making music and exercising while learning. The maracas teach counting from 1-10 in English and Spanish and introduce colors as well. This gem of a toy is under $15.

Music For Your Wedding - How To Choose What's Best For You

Music is an important part of the
celebration of your marriage. Throughout history, music has been used for
weddings to bring the community together with sounds and rhythms that have the
power to surpass age and status buriers, uniting everyone in support of your
marriage.

When choosing music for your wedding (in addition to your personal preferences)
its important to consider the musical tastes and desires of your guests. A good
point to consider is that your wedding (reception and/or ceremony) is an
opportunity for you to give back to your guests for their participation and
support, so choose a musical selection that will appeal the most to your guests.

Music is also a great stress reliever or ice breaker because it helps people
to relax and transition from what is often a very formal situation to an
environment where people can express themselves more fully.

There are 2 general types of music available for a modern wedding, they are:

1) A DJ

2) Live Musicians

A DJ (which stands for Disk Jockey) is a person who plays CDs through a sound
system at your reception and provides stage lighting for additional effect. The
advantage to hiring a DJ is that they are typically less expensive than live
musicians, and you can have all the songs that you want played for your
reception.

The disadvantages to hiring a DJ are that the music can sometimes seem a bit
generic or un-lively, and may be inappropriate for your ceremony. Some people
may also feel that DJ music is cheesy or uninteresting due to the lack of
musical flexibility and depending on the DJs individual approach - you may or
may not want to have them emcee for the reception.

Hiring live musicians is the other option you have for your wedding music. This
is typically more expensive and may involve a bit more planning than a DJ, but
can be a very uplifting resource for you and your wedding guests.

How do you envision your wedding reception? Do you want to dance with your
guests or are you intend to have a more subdued event? If you dont want
dancing, you may choose classical or jazz musicians to entertain - This could
include a string quartet, a harpist, pianist or any other type of soloist.
(Soloists are often the first choice for wedding ceremonies as well).

If you DO intend for there to be dancing as a part of your wedding celebration
theres nothing better for this than a live dance band! The advantage to hiring
a live band for your reception is that there is a certain synergy that occurs
when live musicians perform together that cannot be achieved with a DJ, and live
musicians can are also able to adapt to the vibe of the room playing faster,
slower, louder or softer depending on the preferences of you and your guests.

Skilled wedding musicians can also allow for members of the wedding party to participate by singing along or joining in with the band. This can add a great
deal of value to your wedding reception by creating the great Kodak Moments
that everyone will remember for years and years to come.

Take your time and consider the options carefully. Use the internet to research
your options and look in local wedding trade journals for musician and DJ
listings before you hire. Make a list of questions and concerns that you may
have and ask them of your perspective entertainers.

Your wedding day is YOUR DAY make it great with music that compliments
the theme and emotion that you want reflected at your wedding.
